What Is It?

The Vespa Elettrica is a new generation electric powered retro style scooter and is powered by an electric motor with 4 kW (5.4 bhp) peak power and 3.5 kW (4.7 bhp) continuous power.

Compared to a traditional petrol engine it should provide most of the torque instantly so it will be nippier in town traffic than the figures suggest.

Features include:

  • Steel frame and panels
  • 200 mm disc up front with two piston caliper
  • 140 mm drum at the rear
  • Lithium-ion battery (25 kg)
  • Braking energy recovery system
  • Ride modes: Power, Eco, Reverse
  • 4.3" colour TFT dash with adaptive back light
  • Keyless start and indicator flash
  • LED headlight

The electric motor benefits from reduced maintenance, as does the Lithium-ion battery versus those found in normal scooters and charging uses a cable hidden under the seat however it takes 4 hours to completely re-charge. Battery life is quoted as 1,000 full charging cycles at 100%, which Vespa reckon is equivalent to 31,000-44,000 miles or roughly 10 years of use however even after that time you can still look forward to 80% original capacity.

Unlike most scooters you also get a reverse gear mode for easy manoeuvring and Eco ride mode which limits the top speed to 19 mph with more gradual acceleration. You can also pair your mobile with the scooter via a dedicated app which lets incoming calls and messages pop up on the scooter's dash. The system even lets you listen to music or answer incoming calls via the Bluetooth comms system in the optional ski-style Elettrica helmet.

Under the seat there is space for a helmet as you would expect but unfortunately only an open face style, so you might want the optional top box or their matching back protector with helmet carrier / rucksack. The glovebox in the steering column includes a USB port.

The Elettrica X version has a range of 124 miles, roughly double the base model, which uses an on board petrol generator and 3 litre fuel tank to keep the battery charged however to make space for the generator the battery is roughly half the size and has a range of only 31 miles on its own. The generator will either kick in once the juice is running low or can be activated by the rider using an additional Extender riding mode.

The 10-spoke 12" front wheel takes a 110/70 tyre and the rear 11" a 120/70.

Accessories include the top box, screen, front / rear luggage racks, side stand, colour matched helmet, back protector, helmet rucksack and LED backpack.

Colours: Only Silver but the rim colour can be customised to orange, yellow, gold, blue, black, silver or grey alongside the optional colour matched helmet.
