What Is It?
The Kawasaki Z1000 is the replacement for the Z900/Z1 and is powered by a bored out air-cooled 1,015 cc inline four engine, producing 85 bhp at 8,000 rpm and maximum torque at 6,500 rpm.
Features include:
- Steel tubular frame
- Dual 296 mm discs up front with single piston calipers
- 290 mm disc at the rear with single piston caliper
- 36 mm fork with 127 mm travel
- Dual rear shocks with 5-level pre-load adjustment and 80 mm travel
- Four 26 mm Mikuni VM26 carbs
- 4->2 exhaust system
- Electric and kick starter
- 5 speed gearbox
Compared to the Z900 the most obvious visual change is the iconic 4->4 exhaust system changing to a 4->2 configuration, the rear drum brake being replaced by a disc, dual discs at the front and shaft drive available as an option.
The 19" 7-spoke front wheel takes a 3.25V tyre and the rear 18" a 4.00V.
Accessories included a fairing, panniers and sissy bar / pillion backrest.

Model History & Updates
1978: Handlebars lowered. Z1-R cafe racer special introduced with 4->1 exhaust, smaller 13 litre tank, mini fairing and 18" 7-spoke wheels.
1979: Blacked out engine, fuel injection, 94 bhp and drilled discs.
1980: Halogen headlight, 96 bhp, 28 mm carbs. LTD edition released in black with red detailing, 34 mm carbs, 16" rear wheel and 15 litre fuel capacity.
