What Is It?

The BMW R1200RT is a premium touring bike which can be spec'd up with all the toys and is powered by an air / liquid cooled 1,170 cc Boxer engine, producing 125 bhp at 7,750 rpm and maximum torque at 6,500 rpm.

Features include:

  • Dual 320 mm discs up front with Brembo four piston calipers
  • 276 mm disc at the rear with two piston caliper
  • Front Telelever suspension with 120 mm travel
  • Rear Paralever suspension with 136 mm travel

  • Ride modes: Road / Rain
  • 805 mm / 825 mm seat
  • 6 speed gearbox with gear position indicator

Compared to the 2010-2013 model the chassis is more rigid, the shaft drive is now on the left side, the new dash gets a fancy angle adjustable 5.7" TFT display, the mpg / temperature computer is now standard, the 12V socket has moved to the right fairing, the speakers are higher up, the headlight has been upgraded and the updated adjustable screen gets some help from new side deflectors.

The re-designed and now part liquid cooled engine is up 15 bhp with max torque 500 rpm further up the range and more torque across the rev range. It's easy to identify from the black inserts on the cylinder heads facing forwards rather than down. The 17" front wheel takes a 120/70 tyre and the rear a 180/60.

The £2,000 more LE Edition gets you the ESA, quickshifter, central locking, alarm, cruise control, Chrome exhaust, heated grips and seat.

Accessories include the Akrapovic silencers, Corona Ring headlight, dynamic electronically adjustable suspension (ESA), 49 litre top box, multimedia upgrade, additional ride modes, hill hold control, cruise control, quickshifter, 830 mm / 850 mm high seat, 760 mm / 780 mm low seat, heated seat, heated grips, central locking, additional 12V socket and TPMS.

Model History & Updates

2016: R1200RT LC Iconic limited edition, alongside similar editions for the RS/GS/GSA. The paint scheme is a tasty candy red with matching luggage and pretty much all the options thrown in.

2017: A few small changes to meet Euro 4 requirements, sidelights and judder damper on transmission output shaft. Cornering ABS Pro and dynamic brake light now options. New black and white colour schemes released while previous black/grey and blue are no longer available.

2018: Cornering ABS Pro now standard. Dynamic traction control and Emergency SOS call from the handlebar button now options. Special paint schemes and parts now available to add a bit of bling e.g. brown seat and bronze/silver colour scheme.
