2017 Motorbikes

For 2017 manufacturers are updating or culling their model ranges to meet new Euro 4 emission regulations, all bikes over 125 cc now need ABS fitted as standard and adventure bikes continue to thrive while sports bikes dwindle.

To see what happened in 2018 head over here.

The new EU regs come into force in 2017 for all new models however some manufacturers were already on the case in 2016 with their newer models like Yamaha's awesome MT-10. Other manufacturers updated existing bikes like the GSX-R1000 with massive exhausts, containing a sizeable catalytic converter capable of meeting Euro 4 requirements, while others like Triumph hid the cat under the bike with their new Bonneville Bobber, disguised as a traditional exhaust.

Aside from sizeable exhausts for older designs or designing a new engine from scratch many bikes midway through their lifecycle will be getting chip controlled throttles instead this year. For example Yamaha's X-MAX 300 scooter features a slightly re-designed engine with electronic throttle and because it's then relatively easy to add it also gets traction control on top. You'll also see many bikes gain other electronic aids like ride modes and cruise control because they are relatively easy to build in once the chip is there e.g. Yamaha's TMAX.

As part of Euro 4 all bikes over 125cc also now need ABS fitted as standard, prompting lots of small updates to bikes like the Aprilia RS125. It should be a great year for third parties like Nissin and Bosch who supply many of the big players with brakes and ECU systems. The next big bike shakeup should be in 2020 when Euro 5 kicks in, seeing anywhere from 5-30 times less harmful emissions from Co, Nox and hydrocarbons since Euro 1 was introduced in 1999.

Sports bike sales continue to dwindle, making some models like the iconic CBR600RR unfeasible to update, but the models worth updating tend to now be fitted with quick shifters as standard and Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) which allow cornering ABS.

It's also the year of high tech retro styled bikes (Triumph Bobber, Street Scrambler, Honda RebelDucati Cafe Racer) and mini adventure bikes based on naked / sport / adventure common platforms (Suzuki V-Strom 250, BMW G310GS, Kawasaki Versys-X 300). When one bike design can effectively give you 3-4 bikes a platform based approach increasingly makes sense to keep the cost of development down. It's something car makers have been doing for a while now.

Elsewhere Honda invented a new segment with the X-ADV adventure scooter, while teasing a self balancing bike concept and Polaris decided to wind down their Victory brand in 2017 to focus on Indian bikes instead. Anyway, here is everything we know about the new bikes and scooters for 2017!
